Ms. Henderson

   henderson

My name is Ms. Henderson. I am so excited to be reacquainted with old friends and meet new friends this year!

Are you ready for an exciting adventure filled with new experiences and fun learning? I am moving forward from being a Kindergarten teacher to now being a first-grade teacher. YAY! This is my fourth-year teaching at LCCS and I am looking forward to learning and growing with your child as their first-grade teacher. The most rewarding part of teaching is challenging young minds and watching students be amazed of how much they are learning.

Reading Workshop: Reading Workshop consists of lessons that focus on decoding skills, comprehension strategies, and reading with fluency and expression. We follow the Daily Five workshop model. (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading)

Writing Workshop: During Writing Workshop, students focus on the writing process. This includes: Planning/Brainstorming Ideas, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing. Throughout the year, first graders will publish a small moment writing piece, an opinion piece, a how-to piece, a non-fiction animal piece and learn about writing poetry.

Spelling: Every Friday, students are tested on 8 words a week plus 4 individualized special words. The spelling words are taken from the 100 high frequency words (words most common in books). The individual special words are words that the students misspelled in Writing Workshop or are words they are currently working on in Word Study.

Math Workshop: We follow the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. The big concepts are:
1. Number Sense (up to 120)
2. Place Value (tens and ones)
3. Addition and Subtraction within 20
4. Story Problems
5. Measurement- to the nearest inch using non-standard units to measure
6. Recording Data
7. Money
8. Time

Science/Social Studies: We have many wonderful units to look forward to this year. These studies will include class discussions, exploration through literature, field trips, hands-on experiments, and culminating projects.
Science:
1. Life Cycle of a Frog
2. Engineering Process
3. Light and Sound
Social Studies:
1. Community/Geography
2. Post Office Study
