Ask Your Child About...


Reading: During reading workshop, we focused on making predictions.  Good readers make predictions before they read and while they read. Predictions don’t have to be right, but they do have to make sense! Ask your child when reading or watching a show together- What do you predict will happen next?

Writing: We launched our first writing unit: personal narratives. (Also called small moment stories.) We thought about story ideas in terms of watermelons and seeds.  Writing about my whole summer is just too BIG (like a watermelon), but we can write about the seeds from that watermelon: a sleepover with grandma, going on a roller coaster, playing at the park…

Math: We observed pennies and nickels close-up with a magnifying glass.  Ask your child what they saw!

We also learned two math games this week to help build our addition math fluency.  We played Tens Go Fish and Turn Over Ten.  You can play these games at home with a regular deck of playing cards.  Ask your child to teach you how to play!

For all our card games this year:

Remove the Jokers, Jacks, and Kings.

Keep the Queen cards to use as Zeros (0).

Keep the Ace cards to use as Ones (1).

Science: What are the differences between living things and non-living things?  This question launched our first science unit of the year: Where Does Food Come From?

Word Study: Ask your child about blends and the activity Build-A-Word!
