We are fully enrolled for the 2009-2010 school year. There is a long waiting list. Please note: because we are a Public Charter School, kindergarten applicants must be 5 years old by October 1, 2010.
Before submitting an application, please browse through our website to gain an understanding of the school. We have are not offering any more school visits (open houses) for this academic year. They will be offered for the 2011-12 year starting in November, 2010. Check our website in the fall for dates and times. At these events parents have an opportunity to tour the school and speak to the principal, staff, and parents of current students.
Because the school is family-oriented, brothers and sisters of currently enrolled students are automatically admitted to the school if space permits. If space is not available, siblings are placed at the top of the waiting list. Applications for siblings must still be submitted.
Below are some frequently asked questions. If you have any unanswered questions or are unable to attend an open house, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!

What is the admissions process? How does the lottery work?
The Learning Community Charter School is chartered to serve kindergarten through 8th grade. The average class size is 20 students, For the year 2010-2011 there will be three classes in each grade , KIndergarten - 5th (for a total of approximately 60 students per grade), and two classes for 6th - 8th (for a total of approximately 40 students per grade).
The school is open to children residing in Jersey City. Applications become available in November of each year for admission for the following September and are due by early January. All applications received before the deadline have an equal chance in the lottery. Applications are not treated on a first come, first served basis.
The lottery is held in January. Each application is drawn at the lottery. The lottery determines who gets admitted and who goes on the waiting list-- and in what order. As openings occur, children from the waiting list will be invited into the school. If they do not respond or if they decline, they lose their place on the list and the next child will be asked. The waiting list will be used only for the school year drawn; an applicant who is on the list and not accepted must re-apply and re-enter the lottery for the following year. A second lottery for applications received after January 12th, 2010 will be held ONLY if it is necessary for a specific grade.
My child's sister or brother already attends Learning Community Charter School. Are siblings automatically accepted? Do I still need to fill out an application to enroll my other children?
Yes, an application must still be filled out for a sibling and must be submitted by the due date. If space is available, siblings of currently enrolled students are automatically admitted to the school. If space is not available, siblings are automatically placed at the top of the waiting list.
My number was drawn at the lottery, and my child has been accepted into LCCS. What are the next steps?
You will be sent an acceptance letter and instructions on the paperwork that needs to be completed.
What if my child does not get admitted, and we are on the waiting list? If I really want my child to get in, should I call to check my status?
In the case of Kindergarten, your child will remain on a waiting list while spots are offered to the people admitted. In the case of 1st through 8th grades all children are on a waiting list until June 30th because LCCS assumes that all enrolled students in one grade will move up to the next. Starting in July any spots that become available will be offered to applicants on the 2010-11 waiting list. When and if there is a spot available, the next family on the waiting list will be contacted via phone. The school will contact families according to their child's order on the waiting list; therefore there is no need to call the school to check on your status or to articulate your desire for your child to attend our school.
If someone is not at the lottery, how and when will they find out whether they were admitted or placed on a waitlist?
Please do not call the school for lottery results. All families who have participated in the lottery on January 12th will receive a letter within one to two weeks indicating a child's acceptance, or the child's number on the waiting list. After receiving the letter, families who are on the waiting list will only be contacted if a space becomes available. No lottery results will be available by phone until after January 26th.
What happens to applications received after the deadline?
Applications will continue to be accepted for 2010-11 until June 30th. No applications received after January 8th will placed in a second lottery unless there is a need for a specific grade.
If I don't get in this year, do I need to re-apply for next year?
Yes. The New Jersey State Department of Education requires charter schools to eliminate all waiting lists and to conduct a lottery with new applications each year.
