About LCCS

Founded by parents, LCCS opened its doors for the first time for the 1997-1998 school year, beginning as a small, neighborhood school in downtown Jersey City.

We had 98 students in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade.

Now, we have 640 students in grades PreK - 8th and we are centered in the heart of the city.

We are proud that we continue to provide an innovative, top-notch education that Jersey City children need and deserve!

LCCS is ...

ready4future

Diverse

About 70% of our 639 students are from minority groups, and some 20 languages are spoken at home.

Roughly 35% of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

In Demand

Students are admitted via a lottery.

Every year about 750 children apply for just about 60 open seats for all grades, Pre-K – 8.

In Need

Because of funding inequities,
LCCS students receive only $10,530 per year, per pupil in state funding.

Traditional schools get more than $17,700 per pupil, per year.

Successful

In Spring 2019 we were named among the top 94th percentile of all schools statewide by the NJ Department of Education. In Fall 2021 we were presented with the state Lighthouse Award for increasing diversity in the teacher workforce.

We have a robust program to support 8th Grade students and their families as they take part in the rigorous high school admissions process in Jersey City, ensuring that every student finds the right school for each individual child.
